You can’t change the natural aging process. Over time, your skin becomes thinner and drier. But by making some changes you can influence premature aging that’s affected by lifestyle choices and the environment.
Some tips we recommend following to avoid your skin aging prematurely:
Wear sunscreen. Everyone who can wear sunscreen should. Choose a “broad spectrum” sunscreen that protects against the sun’s UVA and UVB (ultraviolet) rays. Use a sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) between 30 and 50 for the best protection.
Stop smoking. Or if you don’t smoke, don’t start. Smoking speeds up how fast the skin ages, causing wrinkles and a dull complexion.
Drink less alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates the skin and over time causes damage.
Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Studies show that eating too much sugar and other refined carbohydrates can accelerate aging. Add lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to your snacks and meals.
Cleanse your skin gently. Scrubbing irritates the skin and accelerates aging.
Wash your face daily. Gently wash your face in the morning and evening and as soon as possible after excessive perspiring.
Use a daily moisturizer. All-day and overnight moisturizers lock in moisture to keep the skin hydrated.
Avoid skin care products that irritate the skin. If your skin burns or stings, it’s the body’s way of telling you there is irritation. Some prescription anti-aging products may burn or sting as a normal part of the initial application process. Talk to your dermatologist about any concerns.
